This artwork is painted almost entirely in reds Across the page, splatters in many hues suggest the spilling of blood as it fills the background with a violent energy. Out of this ravaging storm of blood walks the battle-hardened berserker. In Norse tradition, berserkers were warriors who fought in a trance-like fury, often said to take on the spirit of a beast, such as a bear or a wolf. Here that kind of warrior’s fury has manifested entirely through the strength of a water buffalo. They might often be seen as docile and dependable animals which is reflected in the stillness of the berserker’s face. Though it is this contrast of meaning to the observable reality of the moment, that allows him to emit a stoic unhurried presence, in little need of rage to be threatening. Its inherent calm gives him the clarity of focus as he moves through the maelstrom of violence without concern.
Traditionally minotaur are creatures to be encountered at the end of a path, like a labyrinth. By having the creature walk towards the viewer, the title takes on a double meaning. It is the berserker who is approaching, but the viewer, who has reached the center of the maze, is as well.
